Naturopathic Doctor in Atlanta

Naturopathic medicine asks a different question than conventional care. Not what disease do you have, but what is happening in your body that is creating this pattern of symptoms? At SIE Medical in Atlanta, Dr. Kimberly Williford, NMD, MS, RD/LD, leads an integrative, physician-guided practice that looks at the whole person, terrain first, to find and address root causes rather than manage symptoms long-term.

This approach works well for patients who have tried conventional medicine without resolution, who carry multiple diagnoses without a unifying explanation, or who want a more thorough picture of their health before problems become serious.

What is a naturopathic doctor?

Quick answer: A naturopathic doctor (NMD or ND) completes a four-year accredited naturopathic medical program covering the same foundational sciences as conventional medical school, including pharmacology, pathology, physical diagnosis, and laboratory interpretation, alongside advanced training in clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, and lifestyle medicine. The defining difference is philosophy: naturopathic medicine treats the person, not the diagnosis, and prioritizes finding what is driving dysfunction rather than suppressing its expression.

Dr. Williford earned her NMD from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, one of only a handful of fully accredited naturopathic medical schools in the United States. She also holds a Master of Science in Nutritional Science and is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian, making her clinical scope unusually broad: she works at the intersection of naturopathic medicine, clinical nutrition, metabolic health, and environmental medicine.

How the naturopathic approach works at SIE Medical

Quick answer: At SIE Medical, naturopathic care is organized around what we call a terrain evaluation: a systematic review of the systems and factors that shape how your body functions, rather than a list of diagnoses. The evaluation covers gut health and the microbiome, hormone balance, mitochondrial function, immune regulation, inflammatory load, nutrient status, toxin burden, blood sugar physiology, stress and sleep, and genetic or epigenetic factors. Each of these informs the care plan.

Most patients come to SIE Medical with one or more of the following: a diagnosis they have had for years without improvement, multiple symptoms across systems that do not fit neatly into a single category, or a feeling that something is wrong that standard labs have not explained. In each case, the first step is the same: understand the terrain.

Functional and advanced laboratory testing plays a central role at SIE Medical. Depending on the clinical picture, this may include comprehensive stool analysis, SIBO breath testing, microbiome mapping, full hormone panels, thyroid antibody panels, nutrient absorption labs, inflammatory marker panels, heavy metal and toxin testing, or genetic and methylation assessments. The right tests depend on the pattern, not a standing protocol.

From there, the plan is built around what the findings show. Nutrition is always foundational. Targeted supplementation, botanical medicine, lifestyle work, and when appropriate, coordination with conventional specialists, complete the picture.

Conditions we address in Atlanta

Quick answer: Because naturopathic medicine addresses systems rather than isolated diagnoses, the conditions that respond well are often those where multiple systems are involved. At SIE Medical in Atlanta, the strongest areas of clinical focus are autoimmune disease, integrative oncology, digestive and gut health, hormonal dysfunction, environmental and mold illness, and metabolic and mitochondrial conditions.

Autoimmune Disease

Hashimoto's thyroiditis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Graves' disease, celiac, and other immune-mediated conditions. The evaluation looks at gut health, infections, toxin burden, hormones, and the drivers of immune dysregulation.

Integrative Oncology

Metabolic terrain support alongside conventional cancer treatment. Naturopathic oncology addresses nutrition, immune function, gut health, side effect reduction, and survivorship, coordinating with your oncology team throughout.

Digestive & Gut Health

IBS, SIBO, leaky gut, food sensitivities, chronic bloating, and microbiome imbalances. The gut is the foundation of immune and metabolic function; restoring it often resolves symptoms well beyond digestion.

Digestive health hub →

Hormones & Thyroid

Perimenopause, PCOS, thyroid dysfunction (Hashimoto's, hypothyroidism, Graves'), adrenal health, estrogen metabolism, and hormonal fatigue. Hormonal balance is evaluated in context of gut, nutrition, and stress physiology.

Hormone health →

Environmental Medicine & Mold

Mold and mycotoxin illness, heavy metal burden, chemical sensitivities, and environmental contributors to chronic disease. Dr. Williford holds a fellowship in Environmental Medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine.

Metabolic & Mitochondrial Health

Chronic fatigue, brain fog, metabolic dysfunction, blood sugar dysregulation, and mitochondrial decline. These often involve overlapping gut, hormonal, and inflammatory drivers that respond well to a terrain-based evaluation.

Meet Dr. Williford

Dr. Kimberly Williford, NMD, MS, RD/LD, is a licensed naturopathic physician and registered and licensed dietitian with a fellowship in Environmental Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and the Georgia Naturopathic Medical Association.

Her educational background spans nutritional science (MS, Texas Tech University), naturopathic medicine (NMD, Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine), and advanced clinical training in metabolic oncology, environmental medicine, and functional lab interpretation. She completed her two-year naturopathic residency in Atlanta and has practiced in the city for over two decades.

Her approach is direct and individualized. No templated protocols. The plan is built around what the evaluation shows for that patient, in that body, at that time. Most of her patients have already seen multiple providers before arriving at SIE Medical, often with labs described as "normal" and symptoms that have continued for years. Finding the functional picture behind those results is the starting point for care.

Frequently asked questions

How is a naturopathic doctor different from a conventional physician?

Both complete rigorous medical training and can order labs, diagnose conditions, and develop treatment plans. The primary difference is philosophy. A naturopathic physician is trained to find and address the underlying causes of dysfunction, not just manage its expression. At SIE Medical, care also integrates clinical nutrition, environmental medicine, and functional testing that conventional medicine typically does not include.

Do I need a referral to see Dr. Williford?

No referral is required. Many patients come directly after years of unresolved symptoms with other providers. You can request a discovery call through the contact page to start the conversation.

What should I expect at a first appointment?

The first visit is a thorough intake, typically 60 to 90 minutes. Dr. Williford reviews your complete health history, prior labs, current symptoms, and what has and has not worked. From there, functional testing is ordered based on your specific pattern, and a care plan is developed around the findings. Nothing is templated or one-size.

Does SIE Medical work alongside conventional doctors?

Yes. SIE Medical is designed to complement conventional care, not replace it. Many patients maintain their relationship with a primary care physician, rheumatologist, oncologist, or gastroenterologist while working with Dr. Williford for a deeper functional and terrain-based layer of care.

Is telehealth available for naturopathic medicine consultations?

Telehealth is available for appropriate patients depending on state licensing and clinical fit. In-person care is available at the Atlanta Howell Mill location, Serenbe, and Austin. Please reach out through the contact page to discuss which format is right for your situation.

My labs came back normal but I still feel terrible. Can naturopathic medicine help?

This is one of the most common presentations at SIE Medical. Standard labs are designed to catch pathology, not to optimize function. Functional medicine testing often reveals meaningful imbalances in gut health, thyroid function, nutrient status, hormones, and inflammation that fall within conventional "normal" ranges but are driving significant symptoms. If you've been told your labs are normal and still feel unwell, a terrain evaluation often provides answers.
