What is Leaky Gut and how can you help your body heal it?

Leaky Gut is a problem many of us face but few rarely understand it. Your gut health plays a crucial role in our overall well-being. The intestinal lining in our stomachs is extensive, covering an area of more than 4,000 square feet. When functioning properly and optimally, it forms a secure barrier that regulates what gets absorbed into our bloodstream.

However, an unhealthy gut lining might develop large cracks, gaps, inflammation or holes, which can allow partially digested food, toxins, and bugs to penetrate the tissues beneath it. This can trigger inflammation and changes in the gut flora, which is the normal bacteria in our gut. These changes can lead to issues within the digestive tract and beyond, including our immune system.

Many studies show alterations in intestinal bacteria and inflammation may contribute to the development of several common chronic diseases. This highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy gut for overall health. It’s always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice on maintaining gut health.

There must be a break in the cycle to allow the process to change. You may be able to impact your gut through the options below as well as others:

  • Choose a Healthy Diet: Adopting a gut-friendly and portion appropriate diet is crucial. This involves identifying and avoiding trigger foods that can exacerbate symptoms such as blood sugar levels. Not everyone is the same and your ideal diet is particular to you. Taking the time to understand your gut and what works well and does not, goes a long way in moving forward in the most effective and efficient means.
  • Stress Management: Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation and sleep can help reduce inflammation and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. Stress impacts us all in many ways. Defining and following a lifestyle that can reduce stress may remove one of the largest barriers to good health for you.  Stress increases the production of cortisol and glycogen, which both increase blood sugar levels.
  • Targeted Supplementation: Certain supplements can support optimal digestion, nutrient absorption, and intestinal repair. These include digestive enzymes, probiotics, L-glutamine, and others. They can help feed your nutritionally functioning body in a targeted and helpful way.  Supporting the functions can help your processes work better including helping you heal.
  • Intermittent fasting: Giving your gut a chance to rest regularly without the need to process nutrition can be beneficial to it and allow it to heal.
  • Stay Active: Regular physical activity can help restore balance to your digestive system and promote overall well-being including lower blood sugar. Early morning exercise or movement on an empty stomach can reduce glycogen so that blood sugar from your next meal can move rapidly into your tissues and out of your blood stream. Movement can be beneficial to all processes in the body including digestive, cognitive, mitochondrial, detoxifying and others. Movement with and through the body matters.
  • Supporting Liver Health and Reducing Toxins: This can be achieved through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding exposure to environmental toxins. Your liver plays a vital role in cleaning your blood.  What circulates in your body impacts your processes significantly.
  • Addressing Allergies: If you have any known allergies, managing them effectively can also contribute to healing leaky gut. The question really comes down to why and how I can impact and reduce my allergies.  You were not born to have allergies; something is not working properly.

The gut is an important and high-level system that can influence many, if not all processes in your body. Taking care of it is paramount to good health in a less than healthy world that we all live in daily. Focusing on good health includes putting your gut close to the top of your list.  It impacts your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual states.  Happy Gut and Health Life go hand and hand.
